ABSTRACT

New technologies, in particular digital visualisation techniques, present a new

set of possibilities for communicating design ideas and creating the possibility

for interactive development among alternative propositions. The purpose of this

chapter is to explore how these techniques have been used in the participation

process, and whether or not they provide advantages over more traditional

techniques, through two case studies. The first case study examines the use

of the Glasgow Model, a digital model of the city of Glasgow developed by the

Glasgow School of Art, Digital Design Studio, while the second looks at a

variety of participatory tools that were used in the development of the Cornton

Housing Development in Stirling, where designers used more traditional

methods as well as computer visualisation.
