ABSTRACT

The study of neuroanatomy is the study of the structure of the brain and nervous system. Synaptic transmission is how neurons communicate with each other. Neurotransmitters cluster in groups and are packaged in a synaptic vesicle. Neurotransmitters range in type and complexity. This chapter focuses on basic understanding of the brain and basic mechanism of action for each class of medication. Medications vary in how long they take to be cleared from the body. Most psychiatric medications are metabolized in the liver and then eliminated from the body in feces or urine. Psychotropic medications can have a role in promoting a reduction of psychiatric symptoms. Regarding the safety of antidepressants, in October 2004 the Food and Drug Administration announced precautions to safeguard children and adolescents treated with this class of medication. Antidepressants, mood stabilizers, and antipsychotic medications can take several weeks to cause improvement, and the improvement is usually gradual.
