ABSTRACT

In Chapter 7 I discussed the growth in more contemporary forms of cultural tourism which are based on the development of the creative industries. However, even in more traditional areas of cultural tourism (e.g. heritage, museums, arts and indigenous tourism), there is an increasing desire on the part of tourists for more interactive and experiential activities. There is also something of a contradictory phenomenon whereby many cultural tourists crave greater authenticity as the world becomes more globalised and technologically advanced, whereas others embrace wholeheartedly the inauthenticity which accompanies more experiential forms of tourism. Although it could be argued that cultural tourists are more drawn to authentic environments than other types of tourist, further analysis is required as cultural tourism diversifies and cultural tourists become more complex and demanding.
