ABSTRACT

There is no question that therapeutic impasses and roadblocks can play havoc with the therapeutic process and negatively impact treatment progress. Table 4.1 lists the five most common types of impasses and their sources. It is noteworthy that while clients are the most common source of these therapeutic roadblocks, there are other sources, including therapists and the therapeutic relationship. Each of these impasse types is addressed in this book. This and the next two chapters focus on various types of impasses and various therapeutic strategies for resolving these impasses. This chapter focuses on resistance and ambivalence. Chapter 6 emphasizes alliance strains and ruptures, and Chapter 5 focuses on transference-countertransference enactments.
