ABSTRACT
This section provides an account of the major trends and directions in Ishiguro criticism. It identifies a number of clearly defined areas: Ishiguro’s style and narrative theory; Ishiguro, multicultural Britain, and postcolonial studies; Ishiguro and psychoanalytic criticism; Ishiguro as an international writer; and other readings. Closely referenced accounts of the major readings in each area are provided so that readers can appreciate the scholarship, issues and debates raised in the different fields. For readers who want a further synoptic take on Ishiguro’s fiction, the dedicated books addressing his writing include: Shaffer (1998), Lewis (2000), C. Wong (2000) and Sim (2006). In addition, an issue of the journal Études britanniques contemporaines was devoted to a discussion of Ishiguro’s writing (December 2004, issue 27). The nine essays in this volume offer many keen and varied insights and are notable for their attention to works other than The Remains of the Day. The issue includes an authorial interview conducted at the Sorbonne in 2003.
