ABSTRACT

Could anyone not care whether she was really in love rather than merely infatuated? Could anyone not care whether her grief at the death of a loved one-a parent, a child, a lover-was genuine rather than self-indulgent? I don’t ask these questions rhetorically. Even so, I think the answer is No. Or, at any rate, when it is Yes, then explanations are called for and I am sure they will show exceptions to be of a kind that proves the rule.
