ABSTRACT

From school plays, outings, clubs and gardens to parent-teacher associations, staff committees and looking after class pets, there is no end to the extra commitments teachers may be cajoled into making. Taking on the organization of a school visit is something that even the most experienced teachers find time-consuming and potentially troublesome. The Staying Safe Action Plan was launched by the Department for Schools, Children, and Families in 2008 to help make it easier for teachers to take pupils on school trips. The first stage of planning a visit is convincing head teacher that the trip is worth doing that it fits into the curriculum teachers are teaching and that it carries minimum and managed risks. School should have clear guidelines for teachers to follow when organizing visits, and if they do find themselves at the helm take as much advice from colleagues as they can.
