ABSTRACT

One of the areas of greatest concern for new teachers is behaviour management. The development of natural internal motivators must be at the heart of all behaviour management. There are many models for behaviour management; most with their own ideas on why children misbehave. Many of these draw from existing good practice and require whole-school approaches for their effectiveness. However, there is only one behaviour management model that will truly work for teachers and that is the one they develop for themselves throughout the course of their career. Many teachers like to devise rules with the help of pupils. This serves to emphasize the fact that behaviour management is a continuous dialogue between pupils and teachers, with commitments on both sides. Consciously using body language in the classroom can be an excellent way of correcting or recognizing behaviour without speaking or interrupting the flow of lesson.
