ABSTRACT

Location, position and definition The name Caucasus is the Latinized form of the Greek word Kaukasos, but its origin is highly debated. Still, there is no clear-cut definition for what constitutes the Caucasus. The notion or concept of the word is used ambiguously in geography, in politics, and even to a certain extent in culture. The Caucasus is customarily divided into a northern part and a southern part, and even here the geographical and political interpretations are different.
