ABSTRACT

Of all the skills employed by a life coach, questioning is the most tangible for the client. The defining moments in a coaching session are likely to be in the silence immediately after you have thought of and delivered a particularly powerful and incisive question. It’s that magic moment when just the right question pops into your mind at the most useful moment, and even before that question leaves your mouth, you know it’s going to make the coachee start to think differently, leading to some kind of insight. However, it is important to realize that your questioning skills, although in the ‘front line’, so to speak, work as part of a team. Your questions will be a direct reflection of the quality of wisdom coming from your intuition. The potency of the questions will have a close link to the level of attention you have given the client through your exquisite listening. The rapport you have formed with the coachee will ensure that they feel comfortable with being asked such powerful and profound questions by you, and they will be able to understand their meaning.
