Effective challenge is an extra beneficial dimension that you can bring to the coach-client relationship. A challenge is when you give the client feedback that presents them with an alternative viewpoint. Ideally, you will offer this viewpoint by way of a question, or by simply stating the facts about what you are noticing. Occasionally, you may feel it appropriate to express your feelings and opinions about it too. If that is the case, always ask for the client’s permission: ‘May I offer you some feedback here based on my perception of the situation and what I think?’
