ABSTRACT

There are many defi nitions of ‘drug abuse’. The Handbook on Drug and Alcohol Abuse (Winger 1992) defi nes drug abuse as ‘non-medical use of drugs, both drugs that have and those that do not have generally accepted medical value’. It should be emphasised that the current terminology is now ‘substance abuse’ rather than drug abuse, as this recognises that the abuse can be more than drugs and could include, for example, the misuse of alcohol or glue.
