ABSTRACT

Effective teachers can usually identify children who are having or might have reading problems in their classroom after just a few interactions. These children stumble in their oral reading. They may have difficulty with identifying unfamiliar or multisyllabic words, answering basic comprehension questions after reading, or they may demonstrate slow and labored fluency. Teachers can be heard saying the child is not performing adequately or not at grade level. Once we identify children with potential problems, we need to ask, how severe is this problem?
