ABSTRACT
Learning to read and write starts long before a child begins formal schooling. In fact, most educators and researchers agree that literacy development begins at birth and continues throughout one's life. Young children learn reading and writing concurrently through observing and participating in real-life events where print is used. From birth to age three, children are exposed to oral language, which is the foundation for reading and writing success. As children experience books and print in their environment, they learn certain concepts which are necessary for literacy development.
