ABSTRACT

Tobacco smoking is highly addictive, and cigarettes contain the most toxic and carcinogenic substances. Smoking is the single greatest cause of preventable illness and premature death in the UK. It is responsible for one-third of cancer, one-seventh of cardiovascular disease and most chronic lung disease in adults. There are multiple impacts on non-smokers and children exposed to tobacco smoke. Tobacco is the single largest cause of social inequalities in health and aggravates poverty among poor smokers (Royal College of Physicians 2002). Smoke from cigarettes, cigars and pipes contains thousands of chemicals, including nicotine. Nicotine is found also in chewing tobacco.
