ABSTRACT
It was De Saussure who popularized mountain climbing by his detailed accounts of his own intrepid explorations. The western Alps were his particular laboratory of inquiry and experiment. He was one of the first to climb Mont Blanc (8 August 1786) and spent a hazardous sixteen days taking scientific observations on the Col du Géant.
