ABSTRACT

The beginning of the discrediting of Neptunist ideas on the deposition of all rocks beneath a universal ocean did not necessarily lead to a noticeable weakening in the popularity of catastrophism. Catastrophes took many major forms such as volcanic eruptions, subterranean upheavals, the gravitational effects of a passing comet, and the Deluge. But as only the Deluge was recorded at length in the Bible, its explanation of geological events was sanctioned and championed by the Church.
