ABSTRACT

In the ®rst chapter, I quoted from a letter sent to me by one of our research volunteers, Debbie. She had described 40 as `a red number with a warm feel . . . halfway up the line to 100' and her parents had looked at her as if she were an alien. Later in her letter she elaborates about how she experiences her world:

Your questionnaire made me think about it more deeply than I have done before, and I realize that I am constantly holding at least three images in my head. Firstly, what I see in front of me. Secondly, in a sort of semicircle, ®lling the top part of my head, but de®nitely inside, perhaps level with my ears, is my synesthetic image. And thirdly, anything I happen to be thinking of, such as my route home etc., which will almost be on a screen at an angle to my synesthetic screen.
