ABSTRACT
The word ‘grammar’, which came into English from Greek (gramma, letter or written character) via Latin and Old French, has been used in all sorts of ways since the middle ages. For example, it gave its name to the schools founded in medieval and Tudor England specifically to teach the grammar of Latin. As Latin gradually gave way to English, the schools kept the name – and some still have it (whether or not they do much grammar teaching).
