ABSTRACT

An important assumption that underpins this therapeutic approach is that anger and rage are entirely different phenomena; I argue that rage is a defence mechanism (see Chapter 7) while anger is a pure emotion, a subtle and benign energy that provides the necessary impetus and motivation to protect an individual across their physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual aspects of experiencing. It operates as an infra-red sensor, delivering essential intelligence about the immediate environment, signalling a need to protect the self in a variety of life situations, particularly relationships, and enabling safe and deep relational connections with others who may be very different.
