ABSTRACT
In the following section I will sketch the development of European citizenship up to this point in time. This section is thought of as an illustration of the theoretical argument proposed in Chapter 4 and simultaneously as a form of opening for the ensuing three empirical sections dealing with the current trends in European citizenship and European identity politics.
