ABSTRACT
The heroic identities in the texts discussed in this chapter are once again not separate from the identities of ethnicity and citizenship discussed in the others. Nonetheless, the texts selected for analysis in this chapter frame heroism in a particular way. As I argue, they are persuasive accounts of the heroic self as an innate quality of individuals. As the following discussion demonstrates, the narratives can be understood as instructional tales; thus the heroic deeds and choices are inscribed in them by words and illustrations. These books present an opportunity to explore how this heroism is conducted in texts about 9/11.
