Below is a general outline of the work that is involved in SBNT. This treatment has been developed to take into account the variation between problem drinkers and hence focuses on diverse areas based on a number of identi®ed needs (Copello et al. 2002):

In cases where no network is present, the work should aim to begin to develop this network by identifying and contacting people as illustrated in the following case example.
