ABSTRACT

Operating on major premise, a teacher will encourage students to learn family therapy, group therapy, individual therapy, play therapy, behavior modification, primal therapy, use of drugs, sensitivity training, and spiritual advice. By emphasizing that life is complex, the world uncertain, human nature unreadable, and ways of living infinite in their variety, the student can be persuaded that cure is not definable and therapy should have no destination. If one ignores the fact that family members are in individual therapy, one need not notice that the family is being pulled simultaneously in different directions, ensuring that change will not take place. One might expect that improperly trained students would feel unhappy if they continually failed as therapists and they would blame their therapy teachers. Most people seem to prefer not to change, and so they seek out the kinds of therapy which do not threaten any real change, like Psychodynamic or encounter types of therapy.
