ABSTRACT

A ll radio is about connecting with the audience but some programmes have a very direct connection. The phone-in, for example, needs the audience to take part for it to work, while during emergency situations many people rely

on the radio to give them advice and information. Local radio also performs a service in covering elections: national radio can provide an overview of the election, but it is local radio that gives the detail and makes the election meaningful to its audience. Radio drama requires a different kind of connection from the audience. While most radio listening is a secondary activity, radio drama, whether it is a soap opera, a serial or a full length play, needs the listener to engage with it and be transported to another world.
