T he radio industry in the UK employs over 22,000 people1 doing a vast array of jobs from producing content, to technical support, to admin, marketing and sales. But to work on air most stations expect some previous experience

and at least basic technical skills. There are many ways to get this experience, as this chapter examines, but all the radio professionals interviewed for this book agree that enthusiasm, commitment and a knowledge of the medium will go a long way to getting you that first job in radio.
