ABSTRACT

In the previous chapter I explored a range of literature which specifi cally located sport as the focus. The intention was to demonstrate the contribution of sport in the construction of contemporary masculinities and how many accounts of sport fail to fully take into consideration the signifi cance of the body, gender and sexuality. Often, within the sociology of sport, these issues are considered ‘outside’ of what is seen as the legitimate focus for study. Therefore, in order to address what I consider to be important issues, it is necessary to explore broader concepts which relate to the body, gender and sexuality.
