ABSTRACT
My assignment for this chapter was "to review changes in the field since the first edition, and to project future trends." The story will start in 1986 (my memory of when Berliner and I first discussed the first Handbook, HBEP!), and move through time to 2025, the likely time frame for the influence of the second edition (HBEPII). The conceptual framework for this voyage will be both historical and normative: where have we been since the first edition, where might we be in 2025, and where should we be in 2025? In particular, what might we expect in HBEPIII?
