ABSTRACT

Patients may be admitted with acute neurological problems, or suffer neurological complications from disease to other parts of the body. While patients with identified neurological problems will usually be transferred to specialist wards/ units, nurses working on general wards should be able to assess significant acute neurological changes to enable early intervention. Nurses can assess their patients’ neurological function through

n changes in mood or behaviour; n AVPU assessment; n Glasgow Coma Scale assessment; n pupil size and reaction to light.
