ABSTRACT
This chapter was written as the keynote address for a conference organized by the English not-for-profit InterCulture and held at Harewood House in 2003. The subject was the complex relationships between the house, the West Indian sugar plantations and slaves who financed its construction, and the Caribbean immigrant community in nearby Leeds.
