ABSTRACT

At the beginning of the twentieth century, three empires, the British, the AustroHungarian and Ottoman, controlled the day-to-day lives of millions of people across the globe. Royalty ruled over further millions of impoverished peasants in Russia and China (Fenby 2008). The USA was only just beginning to emerge as the new major source of industrial innovation. Across the world from Ireland to India, individuals were emerging who would eventually achieve political independence from the British Empire (Brendon 2007). Similarly in Russia and China, political dissidents were building a power base among the population which would eventually lead to the overthrow of their nation’s rulers.
