ABSTRACT

Formal censorship of the Media was quickly terminated when the War ended, but Government was initially slow to abandon some habits of control, for example reluctant dissemination of official information, and strings attached to visits offered to the Media, including the requirement to submit copy on completion. Editors put their foot down; the NS told its editor members they should once more take full responsibility for what they published, subject to the OSAs and D-Notice guidance, and should decline to accept official invitations having ‘censorship’ conditions. 28
