ABSTRACT

It is important that the reviews are not too frequent, to allow enough time for the patient to implement strategies and for meaningful change to occur. However, it is equally important that any difficulties are picked up sooner rather than later, and to this end 6-weekly progress reviews are recommended. They usually combine self-report and clinician-rated questionnaires with a semi-structured interview and review of weight and eating behaviour. Other information – for example, from parents and physical investigations – may also be used. It is important to dedicate enough time to conducting the review as well as to discussing the information obtained from it in order for this to be a meaningful exercise. Generally, an entire session is required for the initial 6-week review, preceded by a homework task of completing any relevant questionnaires; this gives the therapist time to score and analyse the results ready for the review session. Subsequent reviews may be completed in half a session.
