ABSTRACT

So far the scene regarding broad developments in relation to student learning internationally has been set and the importance of adopting distributed leadership in associated initiatives has been emphasised. Also, it has been contended in the previous chapter that such a view is central in arguing for an orientation which is largely towards supporting students as flexible learners. This, in turn, of course, necessitates building the intellectual and professional capacity of individual teachers in the school, as well as promoting learning in the organisation itself. These are the concerns of the next two chapters. Before turning to such central matters, however, it is necessary to delineate more clearly what is being advocated in terms of promoting student learning. It is to this consideration we now turn.
