ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to tell you what you’re getting into in this book, and why. It starts with a brief discussion of problem behaviors and the current standard of care for their treatment. Trauma (and posttraumatic stress) is proposed as a key to understanding the serious limitations of the current standard of care and to coming up with solutions. A comprehensive phase model of trauma-informed treatment is presented, incorporating a series of interventions designed to address the trauma-related obstacles to treatment success. Finally, the empirical support for each component of treatment is reviewed, as well as the research on the treatment as a package.
