ABSTRACT

The core of the video production process is recording images with a camera. In this chapter we explore the history of cinematography and outline the available camera options. This chapter concentrates on the elements of video camera control that are consistent across formats and camera models. The small-format digital video camera is used as the foundation of the survey since this is the equipment most beginning students use to practice and learn the process of video production. This chapter concludes with an introduction to some stylistic approaches used in image making to provide options as you design your own visual programs. In this chapter you will:

Explore the history of motion picture cameras; Gain an understanding of the technical equipment used for motion picture recording; Transcend basic functions to be able to manipulate the features of digital video equipment to create highly controlled images; Survey movements in the traditional arts that can be applied to video production.
