ABSTRACT

Evoking or stimulating expression involves inviting the patient or group to make something, whether it be to choose freely or to do a specific task. The most difficult issue for many art therapists seems to be the question of what to do, what sort of opportunity or stimulus or task ought to be suggested to the patient(s) at any particular session. To my mind, the best activity for any art therapy moment is one which is possible within the time and space available, capable of being done by the particular patient(s), and likely to achieve the long-or short-term goal most focal in the therapist's judgment at the time . If there are any guiding principles beyond these, they are those of economy and ease-the simplest and least costly way (in time and effort) to accomplish the desired goal. There should be no need to use more materials , or to make the task any more difficult or threatening, then seems necessary.
