ABSTRACT

In her book Global Civil Society: An Answer to War, Kaldor discusses the civil or public part of local society and culture, separate from military, religious, and governmental organizations. Local civil societies seem to have emerged in more individualist cultures, perhaps because civil associations strengthen the sociocultural fabric which might otherwise be fragmented. The functions of local civil society in collectivist cultures may take other forms; there may not be as much of a vacuum for civil society to occupy.
