The last chapter focused on motivational and personality characteristics that prompt a person to become a social entrepreneur. Let’s assume you have the prosocial motivation and proactive personality to be a passionate, energetic social entrepreneur. Being effective requires more than motivation. You need to have the right skills and know how to use them (Mair & Martí, 2006). This chapter is about what a social entrepreneur does and the skills and knowledge you need to be a competent social entrepreneur. Competencies are the key aspects of a task or role that a person needs to know to perform well. Competencies can be stated in terms of skills and knowledge. They can also be stated in terms of behaviors. We begin by showing that social entrepreneurs carry out a variety of tasks and roles. We use these tasks and roles to understand key transformational and transactional competencies for effective social entrepreneurship. We show how these are used in one particular role, social advocacy, as a principal component of social entrepreneurship.
