ABSTRACT

Chapter 8 will examine the role of the police in tackling youth offending. The police will usually be the first to respond to offending by young people and they have a range of options which they can use to address youth offending, including reprimands, final warnings and youth conditional cautions. The police also have the power to charge a young person with committing an offence and refer them to the youth court for trial. This chapter will also examine the powers and functions of the youth court.
