ABSTRACT
When sentencing convicted young offenders, the youth court has the option of punishing the young person’s parents for the incidence of youth offending. This chapter examines the laws which hold parents responsible for their children’s offending. It examines the history of parental responsibility laws in England and Wales, discusses the role of parental responsibility laws in the current youth justice system and analyses any problems which such laws may potentially pose.
