ABSTRACT

Climate change and global warming affect the whole of the planet and any attempts to live sustainably need to be on a global scale. The role of architects, however in promoting sustainable developments is an important one. This is because buildings and activities relating to them are responsible for a major part of the energy and other resources that have an environmental impact on our planet. The challenge for architects is to create climatically-responsive architecture that is in tune with its environment and context. Such a task requires technical rigour and attention to detail when the building envelope is designed. Although the approach offered here is of a technical nature, it should not be an excuse for uninspiring design but rather a design tool that feeds the creative thinking and at times can be a design generator.
