ABSTRACT
Energy use in buildings has been shown to make a large proportion of the total energy use (see Chapter 6). The design of building services systems, such as heating and mechanical ventilation, is a separate specialist area outside the remit of the architect. The discussion that follows in the forthcoming chapters is not about how to design these services. Its focus is rather on the energy issues associated with building services, as part of the bigger sustainability equation.
