ABSTRACT

Located at the mouth of the Yangtze River, Shanghai is the largest and most populous industrial city in China. It has a population of 17.8 million inhabitants and an area of 7823 kilometers. The city has experienced rapid economic growth since the reform era in 1979, and has developed into a financial, commercial, and international business center in China. Its GDP per capita was around US$4500 in 2005, which ranks Shanghai 12th among all Chinese cities. 1
