ABSTRACT

The provision of modern accommodation through the refurbishment and upgrading of existing old, redundant or obsolete buildings, in preference to constructing new buildings, has increased considerably in recent years, and there are many reasons for this. Most of the reasons can be attributed to the specific advantages that can be gained by opting for refurbishment rather than new build, although in some cases there may be legislative constraints, such as those concerned with listed buildings, which leave developers with no choice but to retain and refurbish certain buildings.
