ABSTRACT

Doctors consider the unethical and will insist that the patient come to the office for a visit. Physicians understand that patients are notoriously unreliable in reporting symptoms. In addition to seeing the actual behaviors in action, behavior analysts also need direct knowledge of the environment in which a behavior occurs. Furthermore, trained behavioral consultants are more likely than an untrained person to gain important information from watching individual performances or interactions between managers and employees. To get attention or access to resources, they may exaggerate the frequency or intensity of a behavior. To solve behavior problems in any type of setting, ranging from children at home to schools to corporations and institutions, behavior analysis consultants should directly observe problem behaviors. Supervisors and administrators should be taught that supervision requires direct observation, feedback, and plenty of positive reinforcement for a job well done.
