ABSTRACT
On fi rst inspection there appears to be no connexion at all between the way Peirce qua logician conducts his discussion of the question ‘What is logic?’ and a view of the mind that was becoming infl uential at about the same time in the nascent fi eld of anthropology. But that appearance is misleading.
