ABSTRACT

In order to examine the theme of belonging in relation to children at the start of school, this book will recount the setting up, carrying out and findings of a research project undertaken in 2003-4. In this chapter, I will look at the planning that went into the project, in terms of the theoretical approaches, methods and practical arrangements that informed the study. It is important to note that the research arose out of professional concerns and disquiet, which are recounted in the next chapter, and also that it was carried out in the context of the classroom.
