ABSTRACT

Targeted intervention efforts most often include academic and/or behavioral skills training delivered in a small group format as a supplement to universal prevention efforts. Targeted interventions are those that help to mediate behavioral/or academic problems and are generally only needed for a minority of students. The targeted interventions are also considered part of the general education curriculum, where they are accessible to all students, not just special education students. Further, when students’ emotional and behavioral needs receive early intervention, the need for future crisis response efforts is diminished. In addition to quality universal interventions, targeted interventions are needed to help further the academic and social/ emotional success of students. The targeted population needs to be identified along with intervention goals. Students who need targeted interventions need the most qualified professionals teaching these interventions; therefore, sufficient staff development should be provided to ensure that adults have obtained the necessary skills.
