ABSTRACT

It is important to note that many depressed young people will present to agencies with problems other than mood having been identified. Young people often do not take the initiative themselves in seeking help. Help may be sought on their behalf by parents, carers or teachers who have noticed behavioural changes such as irritability or problems in relationships. Assessment may have several purposes. In the first interview the major goal is usually to identify how the agency or resource can best help the young person. This may first involve a diagnosis of the presenting problems and discussing options for intervention. This may be the first time that the young person’s depressive symptoms are noted. A further assessment may be undertaken to develop a cognitive behavioural problem formulation and to establish goals and baselines for change. It can be helpful to the engagement process if the same practitioner is involved at all stages.
